Fencing in Gerrards Cross
Big plots, long drives, and fences doing more than keeping a dog in.
Gerrards Cross grew around its station and its common, and the plots that went up around both are among the largest we work on. A boundary here is often doing three jobs at once: marking the line, screening the house from the road, and carrying a pair of gates across the drive.
That shifts which questions matter. Round here the two that decide most of the price are how high you are allowed to build, and what you want across the entrance.
How high you can actually go
Two metres is the ceiling under permitted development, and one metre where the fence meets a road or a footpath. That second rule catches more front boundaries in Gerrards Cross than people expect, because the houses sit back behind wide verges and the highway line often runs further into the garden than the kerb suggests. Above those heights you are applying for planning permission, and we would rather say so before we quote than after we build.
Height is also where a good share of the money goes. Boards, rails and panels all scale with it. Posts and the concrete holding them do not. That is why a 1.2m fence is not two thirds the price of a 1.8m one — it lands nearer three quarters.
Pick the height you actually want rather than the one you assume is allowed, then read the paragraph on the left. If it is over 2m, or over 1m on a road frontage, that is a planning conversation and it is better had now than on the survey.

Most jobs here take in an entrance. The quote form counts pedestrian gates and driveway pairs separately because they are not the same work: a side gate is an afternoon, while a pair of five-foot gates hung true on posts that will not shift is most of a day by itself.
We hang gates and fit the ironmongery. We do not touch the electrics. If you want them automated, we will set the posts and lay the ducting to suit whoever fits the motors, and doing that while the holes are already open costs a fraction of digging your drive up again in six months.

Gerrards Cross questions
How high can we go without planning permission?
Two metres for a boundary between gardens, and one metre where the fence adjoins a road or footpath. Those are the permitted development limits and they are measured from the higher ground level, so a fence on a bank counts from the top of the bank. Go over either and it needs an application to Buckinghamshire Council. We will flag it in writing before any work starts.
Can you take out a leylandii hedge and fence the line?
We can, but be aware of what the instant quote covers. The removal option in the form is for taking down an old fence, not for grubbing out thirty years of conifer. Stumps and root plates are a separate job and we price that on the survey once we have seen what is in the ground. Worth knowing too that evergreen hedges over 2m can already be actionable under the high hedges rules, which is often what prompts the call in the first place.
Do you fit automatic gates?
We hang the gates and fit the hardware. Motors, safety edges and anything needing a cable are a specialist job and we would rather you had someone who does that properly. What we will do is set the gate posts to the right spec and run ducting under the drive while it is open, so the automation firm is not starting with a breaker.
Is a 2.1m fence twice the price of a 1.2m one?
Nowhere near. On a 20m closeboard run, 1.2m comes out around three quarters of the 1.8m price and 2.1m around an eighth more. The boards and rails scale with height, but the posts, the holes and the concrete are the same work whatever you build on top of them. Put the real height in the form and you will see the difference rather than guessing at it.
