Great Missenden sits in the Misbourne valley with paddock land on both sides and the villages of the Kingshills and the Lee scattered around it. A good share of what we build here is not garden fencing at all.
Paddock and field boundaries are a different job with different economics, and the number that surprises people is how much less they cost per metre than a garden fence.
Paddocks price differently
Post and rail runs at around £49 a metre against £140 for closeboard, because there is far less in it: posts, three rails, no boards, no gravel boards, no panels. A hundred metres of paddock fencing comes out around £4,490 to £5,220 including VAT, where the same hundred metres in closeboard would be over ten thousand.
Length stops being frightening at that rate. Three hundred and twenty metres round a paddock prices around £14,350 to £16,670 and takes the two of us about nine and a half days. It is a fortnight on site rather than an afternoon, and worth planning around your grazing rather than squeezing in.
Pick Post & rail and put the real length in, even if it runs to hundreds of metres. Height matters less than you think on agricultural work — most paddock fencing goes in at 1.2m, so set that rather than leaving it at 1.8m and inflating your own quote.

A paddock boundary is doing a job a garden fence never has to. Horses lean on it, lean over it and chew it. Cattle push. That changes the spec rather than the price bracket, and it is worth a conversation at the survey about rail thickness and whether you want a top rail you can see from a distance.
Gates matter more out here too. A field entrance takes a wider gate hung on heavier ironmongery than a garden side gate, and a gate that drops in its first winter because the post was set light is a gate you fight with twice a day. We set entrance posts deeper than the run, every time.

Why is post and rail so much cheaper than a garden fence?
Because there is a fraction of the material in it and it goes up faster. No boards, no panels, no gravel boards — posts and rails, and two of us cover better than twice the ground per day. That is why it comes out around £49 a metre against £140 for closeboard. Nothing about the workmanship is different.
Can you fence a whole paddock?
Yes, and the form will price it however long the run is. Three hundred metres is about nine and a half days for the two of us rather than an afternoon, so it wants booking around your grazing and the ground conditions. Winter on heavy land is not the time.
Is it stock-proof?
It depends what you are keeping in. Standard post and rail holds horses and cattle that respect a boundary. Sheep go under it, and anything determined goes through it, so those want netting or an extra rail added. Tell us what is in the field in the notes and we will spec it at the survey rather than guessing from a postcode.
What height should paddock fencing be?
Most goes in at 1.2m, which is what the form should be set to for agricultural work. Taller is not automatically better for stock, and leaving the height at 1.8m out of habit will inflate your quote for no benefit. If you have something that jumps, say so and we will talk about it properly.
