We have put fencing up across most of the town: the terraces off West Street, the long gardens in Marlow Bottom, the paddock boundaries out towards Bisham and Medmenham.
Chalk, flint, and what it does to your quote
Marlow sits on the edge of the Chilterns, and the Chilterns are chalk. Dig on the hill — Munday Dean, Chalkpit Lane, anywhere climbing towards Handy Cross — and you are through the topsoil into chalk and flint in a spit. Flint is the problem. It does not dig, it deflects, and a post hole that should take twenty minutes takes an hour when the bar keeps skidding off a nodule the size of a fist.
Down by the river the ground softens to gravel and alluvium. Easier work, but the water table sits high and anything that holds water against timber shortens a fence. On riverside jobs we set concrete posts and concrete gravel boards as standard, so nothing structural is sitting in wet ground.
When the quote form asks about ground, pick Chalk if you are up the hill and Rock or flint if you have ever bent a garden fork in your own borders. It moves the number. We would rather show you that now than explain it on the final invoice.

A good part of old Marlow has no way round the back. If the only route to your garden runs through the house, tell the form — we come in on dust sheets and carry everything by hand, which adds hours to the job. Those hours belong in the quote, not in an awkward conversation on day two.
The lanes off West Street and the High Street are tight and most have loading restrictions. We work round them by starting early and dropping materials in one go rather than trickling them in across the day.

Marlow questions
Do I need permission for a fence in Marlow?
Under permitted development you can go to 2m, or 1m where the fence meets a road or footpath. Marlow town centre is a conservation area and there are listed buildings along West Street and the High Street, where the rules tighten and you may need consent from Buckinghamshire Council. If your job looks like one that needs a phone call to them, we will say so before we start rather than after.
Our garden runs down to the Thames. Does that change the job?
It changes the spec. High water table and the odd flood means timber posts rot from the ground up, so we use concrete posts and concrete gravel boards and keep the timber clear of standing water. It costs a little more up front and saves you replacing the lot in eight years.
How fast can you get to a broken fence?
